Welcome to Northern Star Online!

Female High School Student At Desk In Class Using LaptopLooking for some online courses to supplement your Minnesota high school experience? Northern Star Online (NSO) is a collaborative of 15 independent school districts and four educational service agencies created to further Minnesota’s goal of promoting high quality online learning for students. If you are looking for high school level courses, you can take them online with Northern Star Online. Study at times convenient to you, anywhere you have internet access.

Founded in 2003 with a handful of courses, we currently provide more than 50 State-approved courses, all aligned to Minnesota State Standards. Each year more than 6,000 Minnesota high school students take over 9,000 courses from us. Courses are taught by licensed public school teachers working in our member school districts, so you get access to experienced, professional teachers.

Other helpful information:

  • If you’re a current Minnesota public school student and take a course as part of your regular school day, funding is provided for the cost of the course.
  • Most core courses are approved for NCAA Eligibility.
  • Most of our courses are open enrollment, so you can sign up and start at any time!
  • If you’re looking to make up credits or simply want to study during the summer, most of our courses run then as well. Funding is a bit different, so check the funding page for more information if you’re looking for a summer course.

We welcome you to explore our course catalog and get in touch with us with any questions. When you’re ready to start, we’ll guide you through the registration process.
