Science Mentorship Program

An offering of Honors Mentor Connection

Welcome to the Science Mentorship Program (SciMent)! SciMent serves motivated science students in grades 7 through 12. The goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for high academic achievement in science through conducting a science experiment and submitting it for competition through the International Science and Engineering Fair.

The program is designed to provide students an opportunity for high academic achievement in science through scientific research, mentoring and competition in the Intel Science and Engineering Fair. It was created to reach students whose schools do not have a science research program. For students who attend schools with an existing program, SciMent Science Research is not available and students are encouraged to participate in their school’s program.

The mission of SciMent is to reach young people with a tremendous scientific experience and to focus on the three core values of SciMent: Academic Excellence, Individual Experience, and Ethics in Science. SciMent stresses that the Science Fair endeavor may be one of the best experiences a student has in High School, not because of competition but because of the focus on academic rigor, scientific integrity, personal growth, team work and camaraderie.

“Unity is strength…When there is teamwork and collaboration,
wonderful things can be achieved.”
-Mattie Stepanek

Benefits of Participating in the Science Fair

The Science Fair is one of the longest-running science competitions in which high school students may be involved. It is one of the few extra-curricular academic activities that involve most disciplines. In completing a project, students tie in the scientific method, writing, reading, public speaking, visual presentation, math, and many of the physical sciences, along with networking with peers and other professionals. Students who have successfully completed a project have proven themselves to be ready for many of the rigors of college and the professional world beyond. To colleges they have shown their ability to work well beyond their school’s requirements, to be organized, and to be self-motivated.

Intel Science Talent Search

Students in their senior year of high school may also choose to submit their work to the Intel Science Talent Search (previously known as the Westinghouse Science Talent Search). It is the highest competition for high school students and the greatest indicator of future scientific success. To date our program has had five completed applications, two of whom were named Semi-Finalists, an amazing accomplishment!

“I hear, and I forget. I see,
and I remember. I do, and I understand.”
-Chinese Proverb

Program Successes

Science Fair involvement weighs heavily in college applications and acceptance, along with scholarships. Of the program’s students who have graduated in the last couple years all six had opportunities to conduct research this summer through high-level internship programs.
