Gifted Math Program

Gifted Math Program

Gifted Math courses at Northern Star Online are designed for students who love math and want to accelerate their learning at the elementary and middle school level so they are prepared to take more advanced math classes in high school. Our Gifted Math courses consist of the same academic content as the corresponding courses but include additional social-emotional support elementary students traditionally need. The Gifted Math Program is a combination of online learning with regular teacher check-ins, occasional online meetings, and frequent communication to parents/guardians and counselors.

NSO Gifted Math Courses

Gifted Math 7:

Designed for 5th and 6th grade gifted learners, this course encourages students to become better thinkers, doers, and communicators. Upon successful completion of this course, learners will have made strong connections between mathematics and the world around them.

Gifted Algebra:

Designed for 6th and 7th grade gifted learners, students work with data-rich, real-world situations in a curriculum that places algebra in an applications-based context and where investigations precede the introduction of formulas and expressions.

Gifted Geometry:

Designed for 7th and 8th grade gifted learners, students explore geometric relationships with a wide variety of tools. Instead of just memorizing rules and definitions, students perform constructions, measure figures, observe patterns, discuss their findings, write their own definitions, and formulate their own geometric conjectures.

Gifted Algebra 2:

Designed for gifted 8th and 9th grade students and combined with the regular NSO Algebra 2 class, this course introduces students to advanced functions, with a focus on developing a strong conceptual grasp of the expressions that define them. Students learn through discovery and application, developing the skills they need to break down complex challenges and demonstrate their knowledge in new situations.

Gifted Math Prerequisites

A recommendation from the school gifted coordinator or counselor is requested to confirm the student’s readiness for the course.

To have success in the NSO Gifted Math program, a student needs to be able to pick up concepts rather quickly, keep up on the homework and classwork, attend all or most of the online sessions, ask questions when needed, prepare well for tests and quizzes, and be able to explain their solutions thoughtfully and in a number of ways.
