Expectations

Expectations for Students, Parents, Teachers, and Support Staff

Please read carefully! You will be expected to check in the enrollment process that you have read and accept these expectations.

Guiding Principles

  • Instruction should meet state and district standards for academic excellence
  • Students should be given the support necessary to complete courses successfully
  • Local districts should be involved to the greatest extent possible
  • Flexibility in student time commitments should be maximized

Expectations

In order to promote student success within the flexibility offered by online learning:

Students will …

  • Ensure that you are logging in and submitting work a minimum of 3 times per week.
  • communicate with the teacher if they fall behind
  • respond to teacher communications by phone or email within 24-48 hours
  • check email regularly
  • communicate with NSO if email or phone number changes
  • immediately notify instructor or NSO of any technical difficulties
  • save emails and assignments for the entire term
  • complete all coursework on their own

Parents will…

  • Ensure that the student has necessary access to technology
  • Notify NSO immediately of any special needs, extenuating circumstances, or technical difficulties
  • Respond to communications by phone or email within 24-48 hours
  • Ensure that the student is completing assignments and participating in courses

Teachers will …

  • log in to the course daily to the extent possible, at least every 2 days
  • engage students at the beginning of the term
  • post announcements in Moodle
  • provide a timeline to help students manage their coursework
  • provide timely feedback to assignments (within 1-2 days)
  • respond to student inquiries within 24 hours
  • check activity statistics every 3-5 days
  • contact students if they are inactive for 3-5 days
  • phone parents if no response
  • enter weekly progress grades in Genius
  • create an effective online syllabus according to NSO and MDE standards
  • have teacher contact information available in Moodle
  • have course standards information available in Moodle
  • have online office hours posted on Moodle
  • commit to working with active students up to the end of the school year
  • have clear course expectations and assignments posted on the course website
  • use best practices to promote participation
  • continually work to update and improve the course and website
  • continually contact students, especially those who are not participating

NSO Support Staff will …

  • communicate with counselors to determine student needs
  • communicate student information to teachers (contact info, special needs)
  • contact parents and counselors when students do not respond to teachers
  • provide report cards 10 days after the end of a term
  • respond to student, parent, district or teacher inquiries within 24 hours

Enrolling district Support Saff will…

  • designate a key contact person for communication and support
  • provide all necessary student information
  • communicate any technical or content difficulties as soon as possible
  • accept credit for course equivalent classes
